Some thoughts regarding Holy Week:
1. Most of the world will pay little heed to this week’s commemoration of our Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. Many will live their lives without thought of Him who is Life itself and who gave us life. It cannot be so for you and me.
2. I can think of very few excuses for not attending the Easter Tridduum liturgies: the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord, and the Easter Vigil. Our beloved Savior poured out his love upon us without limit. Are we willing to respond in kind?
3. Peter talked a big game when it came to standing by Jesus, but when threatened by a simple maid in the high priest’s courtyard, his actions didn’t follow suit. Peter buckled under the pressure. I, too, should weep, for I too have angrily claimed: “I do not know this man!”
4. According to Mark’s account of the Passion, Pilate handed over Christ to be crucified because he wished “to satisfy the crowds.” I, too, want people to like and respect me, to accept me as one of the guys, to consider me worthy of their friendship. In trying to satisfy the people in my life, do I also hand Christ over to be crucified?
5. At the cross stood his mother. Of course. She is always with him. How well we do to draw near to Mary as well.
6. “I thirst!” cried Jesus from his pulpit upon Golgotha. He thirsts for my love and he thirst for yours. The God of the Universe, the Alpha and Omega of all time and history, thinks of me and thinks of you, even from upon his cross. We are loved in a way that cannot be understood until the day we cross that heavenly threshold. We are loved! Can we pause, this Holy Week, to reflect upon that reality?
Know of my prayers during these most holy of days. Get to confession, get to church, and love each other. Thank you, Jesus.
